The Cyclists Of Greene (COG) bike club is hosting its final Full Moon Ride of this year on Wednesday, Oct. 8, with departure from the Jefferson depot at 6 pm.
The group will ride from Jefferson to Cooper on the Raccoon River Valley Trail in the twilight, wait for the full moon to begin rising, then ride back to Jefferson as darkness falls.
The full moon rides are the oldest tradition on the RRVT, dating back to the trail’s first year of 1989, when they were hosted by a bicycle club in Yale.
There is no charge for the ride, but helmets, bike lights and signed waivers are required. There will be free treats at the depot afterward.
Two other events are on the COG schedule this year. On Saturday, Oct. 18, there will be a free evening ride on the High Trestle Trail. Participants are to meet at the Jefferson Depot at 4:45 p.m. for the drive to Woodward. The group will leave the Woodward trailhead at 6 p.m., ride to Madrid, eat Dutch-treat at the Flat Tire Lounge, and ride back to Woodward – thus crossing the trail bridge twice, once in darkness. Chris Durlam, chairperson of the ride, can haul bicycles to and from Woodward in a covered trailer, if needed. RSVPs should go to COG President Craig Berry at dreg123@hotmail.com by Oct. 17.
On Sunday, Nov. 9, COG will have its annual potluck supper at the Jefferson depot at 5:30 pm. There will be musical entertainment by club member Von Ketelsen, as well as an election of officers for 2015.
